Cheese + hot dogs + pastry = love
It doesn’t matter if you’re a kid or adult: hot dogs wrapped in pastry and cheese will always be the ultimate snack. Served with the right dipping sauce, it’s a flavor explosion!
I’m taking these piggies up a notch by adding in some cheesy goodness! In the end, you’ll have a small snack that's rich with savory flavors.
Pair these tasty bites with any of my other party-ready recipes and make a batch of my OG puff pastry piggies in a blanket for your less cheesy friends, lol (I crack myself up).
Ingredients needed
These aren’t your everyday pigs in a blanket. Updated with cheese, flavor boosters, and puff pastry, this snack will be gone in a flash. All you need are a handful of ingredients:
Puff pastry
Puff pastry is a laminated pastry dough made with lots of butter. When it bakes, the dough will puff up and create light and airy layers that melt in your mouth. Making cheesy pigs in a blanket with puff pastry rather than the traditional crescent dough helps each bite taste soft and buttery with a slight crunch.
All you need is one sheet of store-bought puff pastry for this recipe!
Pro Tip!
- Serve these with my homemade ranch and your friends will go wild for the combo!
Shredded cheese
Shredded sharp cheddar cheese is my go-to in this recipe because its bold and rich flavors work well with the pastry and hot dog. You can use almost any other kind of shredded cheese if you don’t have sharp cheddar!
Cream cheese
This will bind all of the cheese, herbs, and green onions together to create a spread. Using cream cheese with these pigs in a blanket also prevents the melty cheese from oozing out of the pastry as they bake.
Hot dogs
Little Smokies sausages are one of the most popular choices when making pigs in a blanket, but I wanted to switch it up with hot dogs! Try making your creative pigs in a blanket with any brand or variety you like, such as small sausages or meat-free hot dogs as a vegetarian alternative.
Fun additions
This is where the excitement comes from! Using dijon mustard, green onions, and garlic really helps to boost the flavor when you bite into the pastry and hot dogs. They also round out the flavor in the cheesy filling and increase the savory levels.
This well-balanced mix adds tang and brightness without being overwhelming. Feel free to experiment with other mustards, extra garlic if you love it, and swapping out the chives for green onions.
How to make these tasty bites!
Grab your cheesy fillings, hot dogs, and puff pastry, and let’s give this tasty snack a try! They’re ready to enjoy in just a few steps:
Save yourself some stress and make them before the party!
You can assemble the pigs in their cheesy blankets up to 3 days ahead of serving. Just keep them covered in the fridge until you’re ready to bake.
These are best served hot and fresh from the oven. If your guests are running late, leave the baked pigs in a low-temperature oven (around 200ºF) to keep them warm.
Recipe
Hot Dog Pigs in a Blanket with Cheese
Ingredients
- ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ ounces cream cheese softened
- 1 tablespoon Finely chopped green onion about 1 large green onion
- 1 teaspoon dijon
- 1 small clove garlic finely grated
- 6 hot dogs
- 1 large egg
- 1 sheet puff pastry
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Thoroughly combine shredded cheese, cream cheese, green onions, dijon and garlic in a medium bowl.
- Cut each hot dog into 5 pieces, about 1-inch long, for 30 pieces total.
- Lightly flour your work surface. Roll out the puff pastry to a rectangle about 12-inches by 10-inches.
- With the long edge towards you, cut the puff pastry vertically into 6 long strips. Then cut the strips horizontally into 5 sections, resulting in 30 squares.
- Evenly spoon the cheese mixture into the center of each square, about ½ teaspoon per square.
- Beat egg with 1 tablespoon water.
- Brush the top right corner of the square with egg wash.
- Pace a hot dog piece horizontally ontop of the cheese mixture.
- Wrap two corners around the hot dog with the egg wash corner on top to seal the puff pastry and place on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Repeat with remaining ingredients.
- Evenly brush all pigs in a blanket with egg wash.
- Bake until the puff pastry is golden brown, about 25 minutes.
- Serve immediately!
