The Sunset Appetizer Book is your go-to vintage cookbook for perfectly easy and delicious vintage-inspired party food!
BUT, I THOUGHT IT’S TIME FOR SALAD?
Yup, we are in January, and yes. It’s time to focus on healthy eating, but it’s football playoff season, and the Superbowl is coming up, so I figured January should become Appetizer month at Cup of Zest because I promise you don’t want to see what was considered a salad in my vintage cookbooks.
Appetizer month it is, so I put together this quick Vintage Cookbook Review of one of my favorite cookbooks. It’s the 1965 Sunset Appetizer Book and bottom line it’s fantastic, and you should hunt down a copy!
ALL THE VINTAGE APPETIZERS PLEASE
The Sunset Appetizer Book was published in 1965, but my copy is from the fifteenth printing, which happened in 1974. That’s pretty impressive! With at least fifteen printings over nine years, this book must have been super popular.
One of my favorite parts of the book is the intro. After describing why you need to make appetizers and how awesome the recipes in the book are (basically what was said), they go on to say, “Present [appetizers] in your most attractive and unusual serving dishes. Add a friendly combination of people, your own warm welcome, a festive setting, and you have the ingredients for a smashing success.” I love it!
After the intro, the book is divided into seven chapters, each with an eclectic selection of recipes. You can find easy recipes like Spicy Cocktail Wieners and Olive Filled Cheeseballs in the Hot Appetizer chapter. Sesame Seed Cocktailers, Sardine Canapés, and Chicken Liver Cheese Dip are also included in the book. I mean, who doesn’t love a spicy cocktail wiener?!?
I’ve made a few recipes from this book, and I really like them. I did have an issue with the directions of one recipe, but no biggie. The only thing I wish this book had was more color photos. I love the food styling from the 1960’s, and 1970’s so much!
Overall, The Sunset Appetizer Book is a must for any vintage cookbook lover!
