This week Stephen (my boyfriend), Steven (my brother), Ryan (our youngest brother) and I drove from Los Angeles to Reno to visit our Grandpa Al.
My grandpa lives with his girlfriend Lois, and the best thing about their home is their garden. Their backyard is huge and has tons of vegetables, herbs, and some fruit. Having such a great garden makes meals even more amazing than their already great cooking. Having home grown tomatoes, which are so naturally sweet I can’t stand it, super tender steamed squash, and crunchy cucumbers from their garden is so special. I feel so lucky we can eat that way.
Having the home grown veggies with our meals really makes me want to have a garden of my own one day. Stephen and I have tried growing some veggies in pots on our balcony at our apartment, but sadly it doesn’t get enough light. One day we will have a great garden!
Not only did we eat well while visiting grandpa. We also played some board games (Settlers of Catan), cards (three-thirteen and kings in the corner), visited my grandpa’s art co-op, and we saw Guardians of the Galaxy (you MUST see it, it is GREAT). We also visited with Lois’ daughters (Betty and Mary), which is always super fun (AYCE sushi with them was a great time), and I found out that Betty really loved eating my spicy potato tacos!
One of the best things about visiting grandpa is that we always cook together. Cooking with family is one of my favorite things to do. When I cook with grandpa we almost always cook cajun/creole because he is originally from New Orleans. This time he showed me how to make shrimp etouffee, which was delicious! Don’t be jealous, I promise to share! We took photos of it and I will post the full recipe on the blog next week.
During our last day of the trip we headed to downtown Reno and walked around the Truckee River. Sadly we didn’t go prepared, and missed out on swimming in the river. We did spend some time wading in the shallows and sitting on some rocks watching people tubing. Next time we visit in the summer we will make sure to plan for a day at the river so we can have plenty of time swimming in that perfectly cold river!
We head home tomorrow, and although we had a wonderful time on our Reno vacation, it will be great to be home (I do miss Lulu!).
