I attended my first conference back in May (read about it here in my post Camp…for Bloggers) and had a great time. I wanted to share a couple reasons why I think anyone interested in blogging should attend a blogger’s conference!
1. Meet fellow bloggers in person
There are TONS of different bloggers who go to these conventions. Chances are there will be at least one person there who writes a blog you follow and maybe even love! Attending blogger conventions puts you in a great position to meet face to face with them. Just play it cool… no-stalking… and make a personal connection with them. There is nothing in the world like telling someone in person that you admire their work. And, who knows, maybe you will become great friends!
2. Learn awesome things about blogging
Blogging is ever changing. There are different social media you should be using; SEO, food photography trends, etc. are just a few of them. The list is endless. Conferences have panels and speakers on the different aspects of blogging to help bloggers grow. Take advantage of the vast knowledge the speakers are sharing and implement it when you get home.
3. Make it into a vacation
Even if blogging is your business, or you are trying to make it so, you can still enjoy yourself a little bit while you are at a conference! Go to a new restaurant, schedule an extra day of your trip just for sight-seeing or spend the day at a spa. Also consider attending blogger conferences in exciting locations. Camp Blogaway is the first blogger conference I attended and it is at an actual camp (with cabins) in the mountains of Southern California! Now that is a super interesting location to hold a blogger conference. It had a very relaxed and intimate vibe, which was great!
4. Network with brands
Different companies may send a public relations person to conferences to meet with bloggers. They know that bloggers can have a huge reach to the brand’s potential customers. They want to meet with you and chat about their product and goals, to see if you are a good fit with their brand. When you chat with them, be honest! Let them know if you haven’t used their product before or if you use it all the time in your famous casserole. Ask them what their needs are for a successful relationship and maybe pitch them some ideas for a new promotion campaign for their product.
5. It may lead to paid work
This comes from personal experience. I connected with a professional food stylist while at Camp Blogaway. Although I had worked with her at Hungry-Girl before (she styled the photos for the HG Diet plan book), I hadn’t worked with her as a freelancer. While at the conference, she offered me some work! It was so great. I feel strongly that seeing her and connecting with her in person helped me get the job. So your circumstance may be different, but there might be a chance for you to get paid work!
There ya have it. Five reasons to attend a blogger conference! Of course, as I attend more conferences this list will probably change and grow, but for now, I hope it gives you some motivation to sign up for a blogger conference soon!
